Thirty years later, back in Carter mode

July 28th, 2010 · No Comments

Thirty years ago, an American President defied public opinion to make a reckless foreign policy stand tied to military conflict in Afghanistan. At a time when the U.S. economy was struggling and unemployment was rising, the nation’s patience with an upstart Democrat President was wearing thin.

President Jimmy Carter’s unpopular decision to declare a U.S. boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow shattered the lives of 466 American athletes. Carter believed the boycott was an appropriate response to the Soviet Union’s military operations in Afghanistan.

The unsettling parallels between Carter’s Presidency in 1980 and Barack Obama’s in 2010 are beyond dispute. Obama even delivered an Olympic disappointment of his own. He was flown in as the headline speaker last October when Chicago made its final pitch to be awarded host rights to the 2016 Games. The International Olympic Committee was not impressed by the hollow pleas of Obama and the First Lady and it rejected Chicago’s bid. Even worse. Chicago was eliminated in the first round of voting.

Carter’s Presidency was notable for a string of boneheaded decisions and an inner circle of novices. This is where the parallels diverge. Obama’s inner circle is a dedicated collection of radicals who embrace Socialism and are fully aware of what they want to do, regardless of how it might damage the nation and the office.

As author and radio host Mark Levin chronicled during his Monday show, Obama’s disregard for honesty during his 18 months in office is staggering. In his zeal to jam a transformational agenda down the throats of the American people Obama has subverted the rule of law, ignored the Constitution, misrepresented facts and, in some cases, flat out lied to the American people.

The case of freed terrorist Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is highly alarming. “They have affirmatively lied to us time and again, feigning outrage”, Levin said, about the 2009 release of the Lockerbie bomber. The White House expressed dismay and surprise when the Libyan terrorist who bombed Pan Am 103 in 1988 was set free, allegedly terminally ill. He is still alive and well in Libya, where he was returned, we now know, with full White House compliance.

In fact, Levin wonders (and tens of millions of Americans agree with him): “How do you trust Obama on anything?” Look no further than the health insurance reform debate that culminated with ObamaCare becoming law.

In trying to sell nationalized healthcare, Obama promised there would be no provisions for federally funded abortions (lie); that any individual who likes his existing insurance coverage can keep it (not always, it turns out); and that the bill would help reduce the federal deficit (lie).

Obama’s team promised that the $862 billion stimulus (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) rammed through Congress would hold the unemployment rate around 8%. The rate reached 10% and is now stuck at 9.5%.

Commentator Charles Krauthammer forecast Obama’s inclination to engage in deception three months into his term, in March 2009. “The fraudulent claim that (healthcare, energy and education reform) are both cause and cure (of the U.S. financial crisis) is the rhetorical device by which an ambitious president intends to enact the most radical agenda of social transformation seen in our lifetime.”

Years later, Carter acknowledged regret about the 1980 boycott. He encountered Olympic wrestler Jeff Blatnick, who was denied the chance to compete in Moscow. They were fellow passengers aboard a commercial flight bound for Minneapolis. Blatnick was stunned when Carter confided, “That was a bad decision. I’m sorry.”

It is all but impossible to imagine Obama expressing similar regret when history exposes the consequences of his Presidency. And the lies.

The Great Deception

July 19th, 2010 · No Comments

The Wall Street Journal’s front page recently carried the headline, “Obama Pitches Stimulus to Skeptics”.

Does the campaign ever end? Does the deception know any limits? Does the Obama White House fail to understand the consequences of lying to the American people? Again. And again.

As Obama arrived in Holland, Mich., last week to celebrate the opening of an advanced battery plant underwritten by stimulus funding of $151 million, polls continue to defy the economic recovery optimism Obama and his surrogates are proclaiming. In remarks at the plant, Obama underscored the 600 jobs the new facility eventually will provide (earlier, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm put the figure at 400) the community. It was not clear if these were added to the 3.6 million jobs the White House claims have been spawned by stimulus spending. A nationwide search for these jobs is under way.

By contrast, Americans reject the narrative that growing the national debt to $13 trillion is jump starting the economy and putting people to work. In a Fox News Opinion Dynamics poll released last week, 94 percent say federal stimulus spending has generated “a few”, “hardly any” or no new jobs.

The Great Deception is not limited to the economy.

With his cover-of-darkness appointment of unapologetic social justice advocate Dr. Donald Berwick to take over Medicare and Medicaid, Obama has defied promises that his push for health insurance reform amounts to European-style socialized medicine. Presidents before Obama have used so-called “recess appointments” to flush the pipeline of stalled nominees. This is a particularly egregious one given the magnitude of a federal takeover of the American healthcare system, always Obama’s principal goal.

Berwick has given speeches praising Great Britain’s government controlled healthcare program. He sees healthcare as only a part of government’s pervasive role in the lives of the people. The Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Henninger found one particularly alarming nugget spewed by Berwick:

“The main health determinants are not health care but sanitation, nutrition, housing, social justice, employment, and the like.”

The Great Deception is especially coming back to haunt Democrats who refused to go along with the reckless ObamaCare bill until — and only until — the President signed an executive order banning the use of funds provided for by the bill to cover the costs of abortion. Guess what? According to recent reports, that ban is not stopping federal abortion funding in New Mexico and Pennsylvania. And this likely is only the beginning.

The Blue Dogs have been had and now join the ranks of Americans swept into submission by the Big Lie that is the Obama Era.

The Runaway Presidency

June 23rd, 2010 · No Comments

Runaway PresidencyGen. Stanley McChrystal has been relieved of his duties by the most under-qualified President of the United States in American history.

The truth has set McChrystal free. He is freed from the tepid American military effort in Afghanistan, an effort hindered by a President who does not lead, who allows military and civilian insiders to bicker and snipe, and who has little regard for American military strength and those who sustain it.

Considering that the Obama White House is defiantly uncommitted to dealing aggressively with our nation’s enemies, it sure has a proclivity for dropping bombs. F-bombs, to be precise.

This White House tolerates a Vice President who erupts about what a “big f—ing deal” ObamaCare’s passage will be. It operates under a chief of staff who denigrates the decisions of others as “f—ing retarded”.

Now, press secretary Robert Gibbs expects us to believe Barack Obama is outraged about a magazine, read mostly by aging 1970s war protesters, that hires a writer who, apparently, loves typing the “f” word and did so four times in a profile of McChrystal.

Somehow a reckless presidency that acts by decree without regard for the rule of law is less egregious than a reckless decision by McChrystal’s civilian communications advisor to give a vehemently antiwar journalist full access to the general and his staff.

Not one f-bomb was attributed to McChrystal, the top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Two were introduced by the author, Michael Hastings, who has crafted war coverage and analysis for such left-of-center digital media outlets as Salon, Slate and True/Slant. Two others were contained in unattributed comments by “aides”.

The revelation of the Rolling Stone piece is not that politicians and military personnel curse like sailors and don’t always get along. The Rolling Stone episode that brought down a four-star general is a stark reminder that the dictatorial Obama and his disciples do not tolerate truth and transparency.

We’ve seen it before. During the 2008 campaign, Sam Wurzelbacher (Joe The Plumber) was savaged by the compliant mainstream media after he dared challenge candidate Obama’s wish to “spread the wealth around”.

When Obama led the government takeover of the American auto industry, General Motors chief Rick Wagoner was fired – by the feds, not by GM. Unprecedented.

A Cambridge, Mass., police officer arrests one of Obama’s buddies, a (black) Harvard professor, for obstructive conduct. Obama hurls the officer under the bus. He “acted stupidly,” Obama said, though the truth was the (white) officer acted appropriately.

The list goes on: South Carolina Rep. Joe (“You lied”) Wilson. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (immigration enforcement). Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (BP disaster support).

But this is the Obama way: Attack any and all who oppose his version of reality, who dare to tread too close to the truth. In this case, as The Heritage Foundation’s Mike Brownfield writes this morning, the Hastings piece “revealed a larger problem for the president — festering, internal dissension regarding his administration’s Afghanistan strategy.”

Rolling Stone headlined its story, The Runaway General. It is merely a chapter in the story of a Runaway Presidency.
